Shakib Al Hasan Auctions Bat To Raise Funds

Shakib Al Hasan Raises Funds For Coronavirus:

Shakib Al Hasan, former Bangladesh captain who was banned for failing to disclose a match-fixing attempt in October, raised $24,000 for the country’s coronavirus campaign by auctioning the bat he used to score 606 runs at the World Cup last year. The winning bidder at Wednesday’s online auction was a Bangladeshi living in New York, said Arif R. Hossain, co-founder of an organization set up to raise charity funds.

“It was our first initiative and we’re very pleased with the response,” Hossain said.

Shakib, once regarded as one of the game’s best all-rounders, was suspended last year for two years for failing to disclose that he was being approached by a match-fixing group.

He is due to restart his international cricket in October 2020, as his suspension was reduced to just one year.

Hossain said that the money raised would be given to a foundation that was founded by Shakib Al Hasan, but did not provide any further information.

The auction came two days after more than 140 workers staged a protest at a crab farm owned by Shakib to complain that they were not being paid.

The staff shouted slogans before being scattered defying a nationwide virus lockdown, the police informed.

Shakib said that he was not involved in the day-to-day farm activities, but would look into it now and take necessary action.

“My co-owners and working partners have not adequately told me of what has been happening in the last few months,” he said in a statement.

He said that on Wednesday he paid the employees about 1.9 million taka ($23,000).

Officially, Bangladesh recorded 4,186 coronavirus infections and 127 deaths. Limited test results have led health care professionals to believe that the actual numbers are much higher. The 13th edition of IPL 2020 is most likely to be conducted in October – November slot, and the final dates are yet to be finalized by BCCI.
