Women’s Asia Cup 2022: India Women Beat Srilnka Women to Lift Trophy for Record 7th Time!

India-W Vs Sri Lanka-W Match Highlights

India beats Sri Lanka by 8 Wickets to win the Asia Cup 2022. The team chased down the score of 66 within 9 overs to lift the trophy for 7th time. They only fell short of success once, in 2018, and their victory is a declaration of their return to supremacy among Asian teams. Let us look into India-W Vs Sri Lanka-W Match Highlights in detail.

How the match conspired?

To put it simply, Sri Lanka didn’t show up for the game. After pulling off a miraculous victory against Pakistan in the semifinals, Chamari Athapaththu was all happy when she won the toss, but that was the last moment of happiness they would have.

Lowest total ever scored when batting first in Asia Cup history due to hara-kiri run-outs and unclear strategy. Even though Shafali and Jemimah were lost, it was only a matter of time until India gave up on the pursuit. Smriti looked to have saved her best for the championship match as she put on an amazing clinic with the bat, tonking the bowlers about with her feet and cruising beyond the target with more than 11 overs to spare.

Players of the Moment

Deepti Sharma, Player of the Tournament talked her performance through the tournaments. She says “Really happy with the way we performed as unit from the first game till today. We executed what was discussed in the meeting. I just back my strengths and those things helped me a lot in this tournament. The wickets were slow and before this tournament, I worked a lot on my batting and those sessions really helped me. This win gives us a lot of confidence going into the upcoming series as well.”

Renuka Singh, Player of the Match looked excited. She talks about how she feels about the wins. “Very happy because the last few games I didn’t bowl well. I practiced with my coach and the staff and they really helped me get back my rhythm. Just focussed on my basics and got success. My whole team supported me really well and credit should go to my captain, coach and the staff.”

What the Captains said

Harmanpreet Kaur the winning Indian skipper talked about team’s victory for the record 7th time. She says, “We should give credit to the bowlers and the fielding unit was very good today from ball one. We didn’t want to give them easy runs as every ball is important, proud of the way we performed today.”

“You gotta read the wicket and place the field accordingly. We did that very well and placed the fielders accordingly and that really helped us. We were not looking at the scoreboard and we were just looking at the short targets we had for ourselves and it all worked out well.”

Chamari Athapaththu the losing team’s captain looked disappointed but gave credit to the Indian side. She said, “Tough day as a team, not a good batting display in the finals and I’m really upset today. Next we have T20 World Cup and we learned a lot of things in this tournament and as a batting unit, we have to stick with our plans. I’m really happy with my bowling unit.”

“We have a couple of young players and hope they continue their performances as a batting unit. We do not have a lot of experienced players, but they are good players and think they will play a lot of cricket in the future.”

Overview

Harshitha Samarawickrama of Sri Lanka is second in the series, 15 runs behind Rodrigues, who finished with the most runs scored. With 13 wickets each, Deepti Sharma and Inoka Ranaweera tie for first place in the bowling category.
