Guwahati To Host Two Games Of Rajasthan Royals

During the forthcoming season of the Indian Premier League (IPL), the Barsapara Stadium situated in Guwahati is all set to host the first two home matches of the Rajasthan Royals.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has given the information on Thursday.

In a release, BCCI secretary Jay Shah said that “In Guwahati, Rajasthan Royals will play against Delhi Capitals on 5th April and on 9th April they will play against Kolkata Knight Riders. Both the matches will start from 8 pm IST”.

Other five matches:

Rajasthan Royals’s remaining five home matches will be played at their allocated home ground of Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur. Steve Smith, former captain of the Australian national team has assigned as the captain of Rajasthan Royals in this season. Previously the team was captained by Ajinkya Madhukar Rahane. The Rajasthan Royals will start their campaign with an away match with Chennai Super Kings on 2nd April.

In the official Twitter, Rajasthan Royals wrote that “For the first time, Royals are bringing the IPL to the Northeast, enlarging the mark of cricket in the region. See you Guwahati in April.”

Last year, Rajasthan Royals requested to play some matches in Guwahati and also talked with Assam Cricket Association regarding this. Although this decision is supported by the IPL Governing Council, it was opposed by a PIL (Public Interest Litigation) at the High court of Rajasthan earlier this year.

The reason behind the decision:

The main reason behind such a decision was the discontent of the Royals with the unwell cricketing environment in the state as well as their bad compatibility with the Rajasthan Cricket Association. Also, the Royals had been suffering from losses because of some reasons, which include compulsory seat allotments to RCA and heavy demand for free tickets.

In 2010, the Rajasthan Royals had played at Ahmedabad and in the season of 2015, they played at the Brabourne Stadium of Mumbai.

On 15th February, the league matches for the season were declared. The playoffs schedule is expected to be declared later. The final match is scheduled for 24th May.
