Virat Kohlicreated history by equaling Sachin Tendulkar’s record of hitting the most number of centuries in ODI cricket after smashing his 49th ODI ton at the iconic Eden Gardens today.

Playing in his 289th ODI game, Kohli took 119 deliveries to achieve the milestone.

Sachin Tendulkar, arguably known as ‘God of Cricket’ has struck 49 ODI centuries in 463 matches and 452 innings, while Virat equaled the record in just 277 innings.

Interestingly Kohli smashed his ton on his 35th birthday in front of the full house Eden Gardens. With this Kohli became the third Indian to complete his hundred on their birthday

Vinod Kambli in 1993 became the first Indian to achieve this feat when he played an unbeaten record of 100 against England on 18 January 1993.

While Sachin Tendulkar was the second Indian to smash a century on his birthday during a game against Australia on April 24, 1998.

Kohli’s knock today is nothing sort of exceptional as the wickets were falling from other end, but he kept his cool in the ODI World Cup game against South Africa and not just score his ton but helped India to reach 326.

India already booked their berth for the semi-final of the ICC World Cup 2023 by winning their first seven games. They are playing their eighth game today against South Africa, who is in second spot on the points table with six wins in 7 games.

Opting to bat first, India started on a flying not with captain Rohit Sharma once again took the charge and played a quick-fire knock of 40 off 24.

Gill was out cheaply at 23. Iyer, however, provided some support to Virat with 77, but a quick departure of KL Rahul and Suryakumar Yadav put some pressure on Virat. The modern day great remained calm on field and completed his 49th ODI ton in style, while a handy knock of Jadeja (29* off 15) guided the side to put 326 on board.
