T20 WC: Mahmudullah Slams Critics As BAN Qualify For Super 12

Bangladesh T20I captain Mahmudullah lashed out at the frequent abuse leveled against the squad on social media. After an 84-run victory over Papua New Guinea on 21 October, the Tigers qualified for the Super 12 of the T20 World Cup. They didn’t get off to a good start in the competition, losing to Kyle Coetzer’s Scotland by 6 runs at Al Amerat.

Bangladesh was under pressure to succeed in both of its matches in order to advance to the Super 12s. They showed remarkable tenacity, though, and beat Oman by 26 runs on Tuesday. Following that, Mahmudullah said the Tigers put their best against Assad Vala’s PNG. Whereas corrective feedback is appreciated, “belittling” is indeed not.

“Everyone has social media on their phone. We expect criticism when it is warranted, but if that is belittling, we feel bad,” Mahmudullah said in the post-match press conference.

We are human beings and we also make mistakes: Mahmudullah

“There were many questions, including about the three senior players’ strike rate. We tried hard, but we didn’t get the result. Everyone makes sacrifices. We play with injuries. Some of us take painkillers every day. Many don’t know about these things, so it is not right to talk about our commitment.

“I hope we can be more settled now. Within the team, there is positive energy, and for that, I thank the whole team. I hope things will get better,” he stated.

“We are human beings and we also make mistakes. When we play, the whole country plays together. I don’t think anyone has more feelings for it than us. We played bad and we knew that we would receive criticism. We all were hurt by it,” Mahmudullah added.

Bangladesh was also criticized by BCB president Nazmul Hasan Papon following their defeat to Scotland. Hasan made fun of Shakib Al Hasan, Mahmudullah and Mushfiqur Rahim.

Mahmudullah’s team was defeated in the first match. On Thursday, though, he hit a 28-ball 50 with 3 fours and as many sixes, assisting his team to a total of 181. Shakib, on the other hand, was named Player of the Match after hitting 46 runs and taking 4 wickets.
