Rohit Sharma Says Youngster Shubman Gill Is Future Of Indian Cricket

India vice-captain in ODIs and T20s Rohit Sharma believes Punjab young batsman Shubman Gill is the future of Indian cricket and praised the youngster for his batting skills.

He also wanted to see him playing for India though he reminds the competition is very high for a place in the national team.

Rohit: I Think We Should Bring Shubman Into The Team

He also feels the 20-year-old has a lot of potentials and will prove himself if he is given opportunities.

Rohit while speaking to another cricketer Harbhajan Singh on a social media network said,” I think Shubman is a fluent batsman. He is a future of Indian cricket. Whenever he gets a consistent run, he will get confidence. He has a good domestic record. I think we should look to bring him into the side. There is a lot of competition on the side.”

Gill’s international debut did not go well as he would have expected. He played two one-days against New Zealand early last year when India toured New Zealand.

He made just 16 runs in the two matches combined he played. However, Gill’s average in domestic cricket is an impressive 73 with 7 centuries and 10 fifties.

He is the youngest Indian batsman to hit a double century in first-class cricket as he knocked 204 runs for India A in West Indies.

Harbhajan: Shubman Should Have Played In Tests Against New Zealand

Harbhajan also echoed Rohit’s views on Gill. He feels that he should have been chosen to play in the Test series against New Zealand early this year when Rohit Sharma was out of the team with injury as Shubman was part of the Test squad.

“We lost in New Zealand. Prithvi Shaw made a comeback. He was out of the side, but you guys backed him. I think someone like Shubman Gill should have been given a chance in the New Zealand Test series. If Rohit was injured, I think Shubman should have played because he was there in the squad,” said Harbhajan.
