Civil war in Sri Lanka makes Bangladesh as next-destination for Asia Cup 2022?

As the Civil war in Sri Lanka is unceasing due to its geopolitical unrest, the conduct of Asia Cup 2022 hangs in the balance. The series is going to be held between August 27 and September 11 with Sri Lanka acting as a host to organize the game.

The situation worsen last week with protesters on Sunday staging demonstrations against the government and taking over the Rashtrapati Bhavan, setting the private residence of Prime Minister Wickremesinghe on fire.

Despite, the political uncertainty, the island country was successful in organizing a good long series comprising 2 Tests, 5 ODI, and 3 T20I matches with the Australian team. On Monday, the hosts won against the visitors to level the Test series as 1-1.

However, as the conditions are turning more violent with legendary cricketers like Sanath Jayasuriya also joining the protests, the Asian Cricket Council is watching the developments closely to avoid any last-minute changes with a proper alternative plan.

In order to overcome any last-minute crisis, Bangladesh would be acting as the alternate place to organize the series. According to some media reports, the officials privy to the situation said that the alternative plans are being mooted to overcome last-minute adjustments.

“Which team would like to go there? How can you send your team where the protesters are occupying Rashtrapati Bhavan? I don’t see any possibility of organizing the Asia Cup there. Bangladesh has also expressed its desire to host the Asia Cup and as expected, the tournament will now be held there,” Dainik Jagran quoted an official as saying.

The Asia Cup was not conducted for a long time from now, since 2018. Because of the pandemic the tournament to be held in 2020 got canceled. Despite a serious attempt in 2021, it couldn’t be executed considering any gap in the calendar. Finally, it was rescheduled to August-September of 2022.

For 2022, a total of 13 matches are set to take place with as many as 6 teams to feature in the game. Afghanistan, Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka have already registered berths in the tournament. One more team will join after the qualifier round.  UAE, Kuwait, Singapore, and Hong Kong are the 4 teams that are fighting against each other for the sixth spot.
