Australia beat India by 209 runs to claim WTC Mace for the first time

WTC Final 2023 Match Highlights: The Ultimate test of WTC Final 2023 has been no less than a superb thriller where the Australian team was dominant on all five days to outclass the Indian team and claim their first-ever WTC title. Australia now becomes the only team with all the ICC Trophies.

To their already-full trophy cabinet, Australia adds the only piece missing and that was WTC Trophy with a convincing victory at the Oval. Even though India had a remote possibility of winning at the beginning of the final day, Australia was the clear favourite. All throughout the Test, India’s batters were playing catch-up and none of them were able to capitalise on their beginnings.

Let’s Take a look at how the WTC Final went on;

Day-1 Update

After losing the toss, Smith and Head’s tremendous partnership helped Australia reach 327/3 in 85 overs. Smith increased his average to 95 off 227 pitches with a four on the penultimate ball of Day 1. An amazing 146 off 156 balls was played by his partner in crime, the infamous Travis Head. Australia had the advantage over India at the end of Day 1 Stumps, thanks to the outstanding partnership of 251 from 370 balls.

Day-2 Update

After a strong partnership between Travis Head and Steve Smith, Australia’s bowlers took Centre stage in the World Test Championship 2021–23 final on Thursday (June 8), further solidifying their lead. India took the final seven wickets for a total of 108 runs, limiting the damage done by the Australian batting. However, Australia, who concluded with 469, ensured that no significant partnership developed in India’s innings, as the Rohit Sharma-led side closed Day 2 at 151/5, behind by 318.

Day-3 Update

Ajinkya Rahane and Shardul Thakur’s heroic seventh-wicket partnership on Day 3 helped spare India some embarrassment. The two combined for 109 runs off 145 balls, preventing India from losing more than one wicket in the opening session. In the second session, Ajinkya Rahane was dispatched by Pat Cummins on 89, breaking the crucial partnership. Then, Labuschagne and Cameron Green led Australia to success at the Stumps. At the end of the day-3, they’re still firmly in command despite the lack of runs. Australia had a 123/4 score and a 296-run lead.

Day-4 Update

India’s survival in the World T20 Final against Australia was made possible by a pivotal 71-run partnership between Ajinkya Rahane and Virat Kohli. India needed 280 runs more to win after reaching 164/3 at the stumps thanks to their contributions. India’s implausible 444-run chase earlier got off to a belter of a start thanks to Rohit Sharma. India finished Day 4 with a score of 164/3. India then needed 280 runs on the final day to win.

Day-5 Update

On Day 5 of the WTC final, Scott Boland provided Australia with the ideal start by dismissing both Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja in the same over. After the two wickets, it was a crash for Indian batsmen as wickets kept falling and the story was about to end in a bad way for India. In an attempt to reverse sweep Nathan Lyon, Mohammed Siraj’s shot finds Pat Cummins at the backward point, where he makes no errors giving Australia the World Test Championship crown. The Indian second innings is over with 234/10 runs, and they lose the match by 209 runs.

Australia (469 & 270/8d) beat India (296 & 234) by 209 Runs

Overall it was pure dominance by the Australian side as they proved why they are the best test team in the world. The way they dominated the test match made things easy for Australian players to execute their plans. Ultimately they win the Ultimate Test Match (WTC 2023) and now are the Champions of the red ball game.
