Asia Cup 2023 Afghanistan Strengths and Weaknesses
It will be yet another edition of an Asia Cup that will see Afghanistan’s participation. To their credit, the side has come up the ranks quite rapidly. They have beaten sides like Sri Lanka and Bangladesh while coming close to upset teams like India and Pakistan. Afghanistan came all out in the 2022 edition setting themselves up for a spot in the finals. But their engine was halted at the last lap as they lost out agonizingly to Pakistan and India thumped them in the final match. It showed that they are a side ready for a fight.

In the 2023 edition of the tournament, Afghanistan is placed in Group B alongside Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. It is undoubtedly the tougher among the two groups. Sri Lanka is the winner of the previous edition while Bangladesh has finished runners-up twice in this tournament. It will be a tall ask for Afghanistan to go past through to the Super 4. If they manage to do it that in itself will be a big tick on their CV.

There is very little doubt in anyone’s mind regarding what is Afghanistan’s biggest strength. It is their variety in the spin department that keeps them afloat in big tournaments. Each team now boasts of having a mystery spinner in their ranks, Afghanistan boast of having a bunch of them. Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Mohammad Nabi, and Rashid Khan form a strong triumvirate. Noor Ahmad as seen in the IPL can prove to be a handy customer. If the tracks in the tournament offer help to the spinners then the Afghan spinners will surely keep their side in the game.

The batting continues to remain a weak link for Afghanistan. Rahmanullah Gurbaz is the only batter who has shown that he can deliver consistently at the highest level. A stint in the IPL seems to have done his confidence a world of good. But the same can’t be said about the rest of the Afghan batters. They have shown a repeated tendency to play glamorous shots even in unwarranted situations. If the batters don’t give enough runs to their bowlers, the potency of their spinners will count for nothing.
