Yesterday In 1995 India Led By Azharuddin Won Its Fourth Asia Cup

It was on April 14th, yesterday in 1995 India won its 4th Asia Cup beating Sri Lanka in the final. The tournament was held in Sharjah Cricket Stadium, Sharjah.

The tournament was held between April 5th -14th 1995. The four teams that took part in the competition were India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh.

The tournament was played in a round-robin format where each team would play against every other team once in the first stage and the top two teams would qualify for the finals.

After the round-robin stage matches India Sri Lanka and Pakistan ended up with equal points but India and Sri Lanka got entry into the finals based on run-rate.

Azharuddin Was The Man Of The Match In The Final

In the finals, India won the toss and elected to field. Sri Lanka scored a total of 230 runs for the loss of 7 wickets at the end of 50 overs.

Sri Lankan batsman Asanka Gurusinha who scored 85 runs was the highest run-scorer in the side. Anil Kumble and Venkatesh Prasad took two wickets each and were successful in restricting the Sri Lankan team to a gettable score.

India which set out to chase was soon found in trouble as it lost two early wickets of Manoj Prabhakar and important wicket of Sachin Tendulkar who made 41.

Indian captain Mohammad Azharuddin along with another batsman Navjot Singh Sidhu built a big partnership of 175 runs for the third wicket and led to India’s victory.

Azharuddin and Sidhu scored 90 and 84 runs respectively and both were unbeaten. Azhar was declared the Man of the Match.

India Has Won The Tournament Maximum No Of Times

Until now, 14 editions of the Asia Cup were held. India with 14 wins has won the tournament the highest number of times.

Sri Lanka won it five times while Pakistan was victorious on two occasions. In the last edition of the Asia Cup, India defeated Bangladesh in 2018.

Asia Cup is scheduled to take place in September this year.
