With the ICC Cricket World cup is just around the corner, the boards are in queue to declare the squads, and in one of those events, the England and Wales Cricket Board team announcement stunned everyone when they listed the already retired Ben Stokes in the England’s World Cup squad. Let us look at Cricketers who came out of Retirement.

This is, however, not the first time that a player came out of retirement, as recently Tamim Iqbal also followed the pattern and there are many more on the list too.

In this article, we will look at the top-5 cricketers who came out of retirement. 

  1. Shahid Afridi

The all-rounder famously known as ‘boom-boom’, took the decision to retire five times in his career, as he changed his mind and came back four of five times. 

He first took the retirement in 2006 from test cricket, made a comeback and finally bid adieu in 2010. He later announced his conditional departure from all-formats but made himself available to play this time in 5 months. Then he went on to play till the 2015 World Cup and announced his ODI retirement after Pakistan’s exit from the tournament.  

The former skipper left the T20Is finally in 2017 to mark his final retirement from all formats of the game. 

  1. Dwayne Bravo

The star all-rounder who needs no introduction made an initial retirement in 2018, but a year later he changed his decision in order to help his side defend the T20 World Cup title.  

He was part of the West Indies side, who lift the T20 World Cup twice (2012 and 2016), which is the most by any country and to keep the momentum going he came out from retirement and took part in the 2021 T20 World Cup, but after his team failed to reach the semis, he took the step to finally bid adieu to the international cricket. 

  1. Tamim Iqbal

One of Bangladesh’s most celebrated cricketers and the highest run-scorer for the Bangladesh team in all formats, shocked the cricket fraternity with his retirement announcement during mid Afghanistan series recently, but he changed his decision and announced his comeback for the ODI World Cup after meeting the Prime Minister of Bangladesh.  

Iqbal has featured in 385 matches for Bangladesh in which he scored 15,148 (all-three formats combined) at an average of 35.39. His stats included 25 centuries and 94 half-centuries. 

  1. Moeen Ali

Ali had already taken the decision to retire from test cricket, but his side and skipper needed him, he didn’t disappoint them and came out form retirement to play the important Ashes series.  

The veteran, who was called to re-consider his retirement to provide England strength in Jack Leach’s absence, had later announced his re-retirement after England won the fifth Ashes test. 

  1. Ben Stokes  

When you are truly dedicated to your team’s vision to win the big event, then nothing can stop you be with your side despite you having decided to bid adieu to the sport. The same is the case with Ben Stokes.  

The star performer for English side, who played a crucial role in making England’s dream of winning the ODI World Cup into the reality in 2019, had announced his retirement from the limited-overs cricket last year.  

With England is in search of a quality all-rounder, the current red-ball skipper of England made a decision to come out from the retirement, as he gave his od to play the prestigious event scheduled to be played in India.
