T20 World Cup Likely To Be Postponed

T20 World Cup Likely To Get Postponed, Chances For Holding IPL Becomes Brighter This Year:

In the background of a disrupted World Test Championship, BCCI has made it clear that test crickets remain of the highest priority in Indian cricket, even as the options for a retarded T20 World Cup were debated during Thursday’s meeting of the ICC Chief Executive Board.

The Coronavirus epidemic has, like any other sport, brought cricket activities to a halt. When cricket resumes, at last, the ICC is preparing contingency plans and a further course of action.

During the meeting, the World Test Championship and the inaugural ODI League were the two main issues on the agenda but organizing the T20 World Cup is the first major priority for the ICC and Cricket Australia.

In the conference, the majority of the member boards seemed to decide on three potential alternatives with regard to the schedule of the T20 World Cup.

At the meeting, 12 full members of the ICC and three associate members attended, as many as eight options for the T20 World Cup were on the table. In terms of the scheduling of the T20 World Cup, most of the member boards seem to have zeroed in on three possible choices.

“And though it’s a bit early, three options have been shortlisted. The first is to adhere to the original Oct-Nov schedule and the second is to reschedule the tournament to Feb-March next year. The third and final option that has been zeroed is to stage the tournament in 2022,” said one of the members who were part of the meeting.

“They (ICC and member boards) will most likely host the T20 World Cup in February,” added the source.

“As far as the World Test Championship is concerned, the BCCI has maintained the value of the World Test Championship and it is unlikely that the points will be shared. Test schedules will be adjusted with and in all likelihood, the final scheduled for June 2021 will be moved to 2022,” the source added.

The ICC will keep reviewing the situation, but the T20 World Cup could be moved to February-March 2021 is being made pretty clear.

The members and the ICC also stressed obtaining from the ICC Medical Committee an expert opinion on how long the COVID-19 outbreak would take to subside, in addition to resuming cricket with or without crowds. Post discussions BCCI will take decision on when the IPL 2020 would be conducted.
