New Zealand defeated England by 1 run in the second match to level the series 1-1 at the Basin Reserve in Wellington on Tuesday.

With the win, New Zealand became just the third team after England and India to claim a victory after the following on.

Only four times in the history of Test matches has a team won after being asked to follow on. England accomplished it twice, in 1894 and 1981 against Australia. While India defeated Australia in 2001.

The two-Test match series ended with a tie after New Zealand gave England a 258-run victory target, but the visitors were all out for 256 in thrilling circumstances.

New Zealand in reply bowled out for just 209 runs, and came back again to bat because of follow-on.

This time, the ex-skipper of the Kiwi side, showed his class and smashed 132 runs to help his side post 483 on board. Tom Blundell, who shot a century in first test, missed another century by 10 runs during the second innings.

Wagner then removed the well-set Root for 95 to bring New Zealand back in game.

England lost their eighth wicket in the form of Stuart Broad. The only hope left for them at the crease was the wicketkeeper Ben Foakes and he along with Leach started to collect runs and kept England in the game. The visitors just needed 7 runs then the experienced Southee trapped Foakes in his short-ball and removed him. Anderson was the last player to walk back at the time English side required only 2 run to win.
