Will VVS Laxman replace Gautam Gambhir as India’s test coach?

Gautam Gambhir as India Head Coach

An ODI series defeat after 27 years against Sri Lanka, and a 3-0 home test series loss against New Zealand proved to be a shaky start for Gautam Gambhir as India head coach

There were tremendously high hopes from Gambhir, especially after India won the T20 World Cup 2024 under Rahul Dravid, while Gambhir succeeded Dravid after guiding KKR to their third IPL title in 2024 as mentor, but the reality appears to be totally opposite of expectations.

With India’s next major assignment is against Australia, Gambhir’s coaching skills will also be tested during the series. As per few reports, Gambhir could be removed as India’s test coach if India not able to perform well down under.

Will VVS Laxman replace Gautam Gambhir as India’s test coach?

Yes, as per a report in Dainik Jagran Gambhir may be removed if team India fails in Australia. In that scenario, BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) can ask NCA head VVS Laxman to take over as next test coach of team India.

Team India under coach Gautam Gambhir

The Gambhir-era started with India tour of Sri Lanka, where the men in blue played 3 T20Is and 3 ODIs. It was a new beginning for India in T20Is after Rohit Sharma took retirement from the format following ICC T20 World Cup win in June 2024.

The newly appointed captain, Suryakumar Kumar-led Indian team won the T20I 3-0, which marked a positive start for Gambhir also as a coach.

However, India lost the ODI series 2-0, while one match ended in a draw, despite playing with nearly full-strength side. It was India’s first ODI bilateral series loss against Sri Lanka after 27 years.

Gambhir’s second assignment was a 2-match test series and 3-match T20I series against Bangladesh at home. India won both red and white ball matches dominantly to record a complete whitewash.

After such a convincing performance, the Indian side seemed clueless against New Zealand in home test series, which they shockingly lost by 3-0.
