T20 World Cup 2022: What Do The Venues Say

T20 World Cup 2022 Venue

Australia is the defending T20 World Cup champion. It is for the first time in tournament’s history that Australia will be hosting the T20 World Cup. They have the golden chance of breaking two significant records in this edition. Australia can become the first team to win at home. If they win the world title, they will become the first side to ever defend their crown. Let us look at T20 World Cup 2022 Venue in detail.

The challenge of playing in Australia:

Australian grounds and venues possess an entirely different set of challenge. Quality players often find a way to excel while the others struggle to come to terms with the wickets. There is something in it for everyone in Australia.

The true bounce wickets aid not just pacers but spinners too. Batsmen can trust the bounce to even hit through the line. Teams who combat the conditions well will be at the forefront of lifting the T20 World Cup 2022.

We look at what do numbers say about the different venues for this T20 World Cup:

[Numbers post October 1, 2020]

# Bellerive Oval, Hobart

The ground won’t be featuring any of the potential on-paper blockbusters. But it is such a small ground relatively that expect high-scoring encounters at this venue. Despite this being a tough ground to end, chasing teams have found success just 23% of times. Finger spin thrives better (economy rate – 7.30) at Hobart as compared to wrist-spin (8.76). Average run-rate at this venue is 8.12.

# The Gabba, Brisbane

Historically known as the one of hardest places to bat. The Gabba holds a special place in the hearts of cricket lovers. The disparity between finger and wrist-spin isn’t much here. They concede runs at 6.68 and 7.11 respectively. Teams chasing have won 45% of times. The average run-rate at Gabba is an impressive 8.13.

# Perth Stadium

The WACA’s dive into extinction brought out the new Optus stadium in Perth. There has been no dearth in drama at the new stadium though. The drop-in wickets have often caught players off-guard. In the 6 games played here post 1st October 2020, team chasing has won just once. The finger-spinners are economical at this venue too as compared to wrist-spinners. Average run-rate at this venue is 7.92.

# The Adelaide Oval

It is the only Australian venue where wrist-spinners hold an ace over finger-spinners. The Adelaide Oval has short square boundaries encouraging batters to play the cut and the pull. It won’t be a surprise if this is the venue that produces high scoring games in the tournament. The venue will be hosting the second semifinal. Expect fireworks!

# The SCG

It’s two of the most iconic venues in Australia. SCG will play hosts to several big-ticket games this edition. It includes the first semifinal and the game between the Trans-Tasman rivals. SCG is one of the high scoring grounds in the country. The average run-rate at this venue is 8.24. Teams batting second have won 36% of the times.

# The MCG

Needless to say, it is the MCG that takes the honours when it comes to sporting venues in the country. The MCG will play host to two of the most high-profile rivalries in world cricket. India-Pakistan and Australia-England will lock horns at the MCG. There is no clear advantage batting first at MCG as teams chasing have won 50% of the games. Its only fair that MCG hosts the 2022 T20 World Cup final.
