The Teams With The Highest Win Percentage In ICC Finals

Highest win percentage in World Cup finals

England became the second team after the West Indies to win a second T20 World Cup title. They became the first team to hold both the World Cups (ODI – 2019 & T20 – 2022) at the same time. England is arguably now the most fearsome white-ball side in the world. They have taken over the mantle from other leading contemporary teams. Let us look at the teams with the Highest win percentage in World Cup finals.

It is now up to them to set the bar high in the coming ICC World Cup across formats. Their win in the finals against Pakistan though bought up an interesting discussion as to which team has a high success ratio in the finals.

We look at the teams with the highest win percentage in World Cup finals:

#5 Pakistan – 40.00%

They finished as runners-up in the final against England in T20 World Cup 2022. It wasn’t the first instance where Pakistan came second-best in a World Cup final. They had previously lost to Australia in the ODI World Cup final in 1999. India had beaten them to the post in the 2007 T20 World Cup final.

Pakistan emerged successful in 1992 in their first-ever World Cup final attempt. They won the 2009 T20 World Cup final as well. Their success percentage in the World Cup finals stands at 40.

#4 England – 42.86%

They had to suffer the ignominy of losing their first three World Cup finals in 1979, 1987, and 1992. It is to England’s credit that they have gone on to win 3 World Cup finals out of the next four they contested. England first tasted World Cup success in T20 World Cup 2010. They went on to win the epic World Cup ODI final in 2019.

England went on to add a second T20 World Cup title to their kitty in 2022. They have 3 wins out of the 7 finals they have played so far. Their success percentage is a decent 42.86.

#3 India – 60.00%

They have failed in the semifinals quite recently in ICC tournaments. India last played a World Cup final in the 2014 T20 World Cup. They lost to Sri Lanka in the finals then. India’s other loss in the World Cup finals came in the 2003 ODI World Cup. They have won 3 World Cups so far. Their first win came in 1983.

India was the inaugural T20 World Cup winner in 2007. They went on to win the ODI World Cup again in 2011. India has 3 wins from 5 finals giving them a good win percentage of 60.

#2 Australia – 66.66%

It might come as a surprise that Australia occupies the second spot on this list. They are the only team to contest 9 World Cup finals so far. Australia has won 6 finals out of those. Their first World Cup win dates back to 1987. Australia’s golden era kickstarted with their hattrick of ODI World Cup titles (1999-2007). They added another ODI World Cup in 2015.

Australia won their only missing trophy in 2021 when they pocketed the T20 World Cup. Their loss in finals came in 1975, 1996, and 2010 T20 World Cup finals. Hence they boast a solid win percentage of 66.66.

#1 West Indies – 80.00%

They were the early movers in world cricket. West Indies ruled the cricketing world for a good two decades. Their domination coincided with two successive World Cup wins in 1975 and 1979. Post their loss to India in the 1983 World Cup final, they no longer remained the force in ODI cricket.

T20 cricket revived their fortunes largely. West Indies racked up two T20 World Cup titles (2012 & 2016). They became the first side to achieve this feat. West Indies’ only defeat in a World Cup final remains the iconic 1983 World Cup. No wonder they have an outstanding win percentage of 80 in the finals.
