Glenn Maxwell Says IPL Can Happen Without Crowds But Not World Cup

Australia explosive batsman Glenn Maxwell thinks that an IPL with a changed schedule without any spectators is possible but a T20 world cup without crowds in stadium is not desirable.

Maxwell: Crowds Very Important For World Cup

He feels that without fans cheering from the stands conducting of the upcoming T20world cup is unthinkable. The outbreak of corona which has killed more than one lakh people worldwide has caused the uncertainty of both the tournaments.

The BCCI has a chance of going ahead with this year’s Indian Premier League in the months of October and November if the world cup gets postponed.

Glenn Maxwell one of the top players in T20 format feels that if both the tournaments are to be played in empty stadiums he wants the IPL to take place rather than the world cup.

“… it’s going to be hard for us to have crowds. I think if IPL goes ahead they can probably survive without any crowds, but I can’t see the T20 World Cup surviving without any people there,” Maxwell told ABC Grandstand

He also feels that the world cup will not happen in the near future as it can’t be held without people in the stadium and people’s health has to be taken care of.

“It’s going to be hard for us to justify having a World Cup when we can’t get people into the grounds. So I can’t see it is happening in the near future. We’ve got to take care of everyone’s health and well being.”

IPL which was initially supposed to kick off on March 29th was postponed to April 15th. But the tournament is most likely heading for further postponement as the corona pandemic is still rampant.

Organizers Hope World Cup To Take Place As Planned

On the other hand, the T20 world cup is scheduled to be held in Australia starting from October 15th this year amidst corona fears.

The organizers are confident that the mega event will go ahead as scheduled and are saying that there are no plans of rescheduling it yet.
