Reasons behind India loss against England

Cricket analysts and fans alike expressed an immense amount of confidence in India prior to the start of the test series against England.

The English team was also contemplating how to deal with Indian spinners on Indian surfaces, but they done their homework and did what they were renowned for.

England, led by Ben Stokes, defeated India in the first test to take a 1-0 lead in the five-match series.

Let’s look at the reasons behind India’s loss against England

  1. Overconfidence

When it comes to playing on home turf, India has been a formidable opponent. They defeated numerous large teams, including Australia, in last year’s Border-Gasvaskar Trophy and subsequently advanced to the World Test Championship Final, demonstrating the Indian side’s strength in test cricket. But it doesn’t mean you can overlook a huge opponent like England, especially when they’re using an effective strategy (Bazball).

The Indians dominated the test for the first three and a half days, but England changed gears and dominated the game and stole the show.

Exactly the same situation happened in the lone test in Edgbaston in 2022, when Jasprit Bumrah captained the Indian side. India led the game for the first three days, but England’s Bazball tactic shifted the tide, and India lost.

  1. Irresponsible approach from Skipper

Rohit Sharma, India’s captain, is without a doubt a significant player, but when you’re playing against such a big team with a lot of young players, you have to step up as the most experienced batter. Rohit not just failed as a batter again but failed to exhibit his leadership skills to battle for his team.

His knocks of 24 and 29, respectively, were ineffective if they did not contribute to the team’s victory. As an opener, the fact that he is yet to score a fifty in the test is cause for concern.  Being an opener, he has failed to even score a fifty in the first test which is a big concern.

  1. No Game Plan for set batter

Ollie Pope was the game changer in the match, scoring 196 in the second innings and leading England to 420.

nevertheless, with day three ending at 316 for 6 and Pope at 148 not out, the Indian side must prepare to get him out in the opening half of the fourth day and the other batters to limit the lead. But it didn’t happen, and England added another 104 to give India a decent 231-run target.

  1. Middle order Failure

There was no Virat Kohli, Cheteshwar Pujara, or Ajinkya Rahane to rescue India, as the selectors showed faith in youngsters. KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer, however, were part of the side. Rahul showed intent in the first innings and played a knock of 86, while an 87 from Jadeja helped India to put 436 on board in first innings.

But the middle order failure in the second innings, after the top-three throwed their wickets, dumped India’s chances to chase even 231 runs.

  1. Virat Kohli’s absence

Virat Kohli, often referred to as the run-machine, is a key member of the Indian batting order. Kohli not only takes entire responsibility of controlling the game, but he also ends the game despite batting at number 3 position.

Kohli was the standout performance for India in the recent ODI World Cup, which was held in India, and he played a significant role in helping India win important matches with effective match-winning knocks. His test cricket record is also quite remarkable, although his absence in the first test cost India the game.
