Due To New Contract, We Aren’t Paid Till Now: Lankan Players

The young Indian team crushed Sri Lanka by  7-wickets with 80 deliveries to play during the first match of the three-match ODI series. The defeat resulted in the reopening of past emotions. In recent years, Sri Lankan cricket has been engaged in a series of controversies. Many players have yet to sign contracts, and reports have suggested that they are having difficulty paying back their property insurance and EMIs. Sri Lankan cricketers refuse to sign new contract as payment dispute.

Sri Lankan cricket players refuse to sign reduced pay contracts

Sri Lankan cricketers refuse to sign new contract due to payment dispute. According to Sunday Morning, the players have addressed a letter to the Sri Lanka Board, requesting that the contract be honoured and the old dues are paid as soon as possible.

Due to the new contract, we have not been paid any kind since January 2021. The players are not clear about the new contract. They should be informed about this in writing. Under the new contract, the salary of the players has to be cut by 30 percent.”

According to a source, the lack of yearly contracts has had a significant impact on individuals. Even paying the house payment and their parents’ insurance is tough for them. Some people have even called their marriages off. Junior players are caught in the middle of a battle between senior players and the board. Because they were not chosen for the ongoing series, they have the impression that their careers will come to an end without a contract.

Young players are seeking to avoid the issue

Muttiah Muralitharan, the Sri Lankan great, has slammed the top players for the stalemate. The spin legend is a member of the Sri Lanka cricket board’s technical advisory committee. Because players like Dimuth Karunaratne and Angelo Mathews are getting paid less under the new contract, Muralitharan claims that they are attempting to block and obstruct the development of junior players for their personal gain.

According to the statement, younger players are seeking to avoid the issue, and their yearly salary will rise significantly. As a result, the players have sent the board a letter in which they acknowledge the point. The players have urged that the deal be implemented on January 1, 2021.
