ENG vs SL 1st Innings Update: Sri Lanka Fails To Put Big Total

Srilanka decided to bat first after they won the toss. The decision looked impressive in the first then overs when the side was cruising at 84. But as the innings hit halfway mark, the moods changed completely.

Nissanka and Kusal Mendis attacked the English early in the match, scoring 17 runs off Mark Wood’s opening over. In the Woakes over, Mendis was hit by the short ball and collapsed, but the onslaught continued. Nissanka hammered five sixes and two fours on his way to his fifty, playing like a man possessed. He ended his knock at 67 off 45.

After the powerplay, though, England slowed things down with Adil Rashid’s spin. The leg-spinner had been put through the ringer throughout the campaign, but tonight he produced outstanding statistics of 1/16 from his four overs.

Sam Curran and Ben Stokes each took a wicket as Sri Lanka’s middle-order batsmen all fell easily as a result of the pressure Rashid’s calm overs created. With his raw speed, Wood reemerged towards the end to worry Sri Lanka, giving up 10 runs in his final two overs while taking two wickets.

ENG vs SL 1st Innings Update: Adil Rashid’s Bowling

The best bowler for England, Adil Rashid talked about Srilanka’s innings. He said, “They got off to a good start, but we came back strong, we stuck to our strengths. They were going well (in the powerplay), but that’s T20 cricket, things can change very quickly.”

“These conditions have been slow as compared to the other grounds, but we have to adapt quickly. I work hard in the nets, sometimes I bowl well, sometimes not so. Hopefully, we can do well as a team. It’s a big second innings for us, hopefully, we’ll be able to come out and chase it down.”

ENG vs SL 1st Innings Analysis

Srilanka started with so much energy but they could not capitalize on the momentum their openers provided them. None of the batters in the middle order played up to the mark. Yet again, they failed to put up a big score and a lot not heaves on their bowlers’ shoulders.

England must be proud of the way they played in the second half. It was just like the match against Ireland where they got hit in first ten but restricted in the later 10. The bowlers bowled with discipline. Sam Curran and Ben Stokes again turned out to be fruitful allrounders for the team. They will be happy with the effort.
