BCCI Announces CWG squad; Mandhana’s Deputy Kaur To Lead The Team

CWG 2022: As the Commonwealth Games 2022 are set to begin on July 28 in Birmingham, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the Indian Women’s Cricket Team squad comprising 15 players.

Considering to be one of the historical movements, the game of Cricket in the women’s category is going to perform for the first time in Commonwealth Games.

This is going to be the first time since 1998 when the men’s cricket teams associated with the Commonwealth nations participated in the quadrennial event for the first and the only time in Kuala Lumpur.

“The All-India Women’s Selection Committee met on Monday to pick the squad for the forthcoming CWG 2022 in Birmingham. This will be the first time that Women’s T20 International will be featured in the prestigious multi-sport event,” said a BCCI statement.

After Smriti Mandhana, it is now Harmanpreet Kaur’s turn to lead the team post the retirement of veteran India international player Mithali Raj. The Indian women’s cricket team is placed in Group A alongside World Champions Australia, Barbados, and Pakistan.

“India is in Group A with Australia, Barbados, and Pakistan. Sri Lanka, England, New Zealand, and South Africa are placed in Group B. The top two teams from the respective pools will progress to the semi-finals. India is scheduled to play three games in the league stage of the tournament starting 29th July 2022.”

The teams that are going to feature in Group B are Sri Lanka, England, New Zealand, and South Africa with the tournament completely consisting of eight teams.

India will play against Australia in the tournament opener on July 29. After that, a match has been scheduled against Pakistan on July 31 and Barbados on August 3 respectively. All the matches will be played at Edgbaston. The top two teams from each group will make it to the semi-final stage.

Standby players: Simran Dil Bahadur, Richa Ghosh, Poonam Yadav.
