The government has reportedly sent a proposal to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to organise a cricket match on August 22 between India and the rest of the globe as part of celebrations to honour 75 years of India’s independence. According to media reports, the Ministry of Culture, wants BCCI officials to ask top Indian players as well as star cricketers from rest of world to play the match as part of the Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav campaign.
The government’s proposal has been confirmed by BCCI, although the national organisation is currently considering the alternatives. Due to international cricket duties and the fact that the Caribbean Premier and England‘s Hundred will both be taking place during that time, the availability of a top-notch World XI remains the major obstacle at this point.
“We have received a proposal from the government to organise a cricket match between India XI and World XI on August 22. For a rest of the world squad, we would need at least 13-14 international players and their availability is something that we need to check on,” a source said.
He further added, the Caribbean Premier League would also start at that time. And English domestic cricket would be in full swing. The BCCI is determining whether players from other countries would need to get financial compensation for taking part.
Top BCCI officials will be attending the ICC annual conference in Birmingham (July 22–26), where they may speak with representatives of other boards to secure the release of a couple of their players for the match in India.
Given that it is an event that is organised by the Indian government, BCCI insiders claimed that the Indian cricketers wouldn’t require much persuasion. To make sure that the World XI team is of the highest calibre, they added, is the current cause for concern.
The match’s classification as either an international T20 or a friendly is unknown as of yet. The Arun Jaitely Stadium in Delhi is likely to host the game if it happens.
The government launched the Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav campaign to remember and celebrate 75 years of independence with a focus on spotlighting moments and persons who, despite being involved in the freedom movement, have mostly gone unnoticed and unsung.
