The national selectors, on Saturday, announced the 15-man squad for the three ODIs against Zimbabwe (July 30). The challenging assignment will come in a week when the selectors gather once more to choose the team for the Asia Cup. The announcement of the Asia Cup team must be made before August 8th.
With the exception of injury-related unforeseen circumstances, it is possible to say with some degree of certainty that the side selected for the Asia Cup will be nearly same to the one that will fly to Australia for the Twenty20 World Cup in October-November.
A BCCI official said, “Selectors have been selecting the squad via virtual meetings. But this time they will physically meet and select the Indian squad for Asia Cup. We are confident KL Rahul will recover for the event. The team needs his quality of player.”
The six T20I matches against Australia and South Africa in September and October will also feature the same group of players. Prior to the World Cup, the selectors seek to provide the team management with a suitable number of games to work with.
It goes without saying that Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah, and KL Rahul will all be available for the Asia Cup. Due to family and medical obligations, the three are now absent from the T20I team playing in the West Indies.
Rahul’s health was discussed at the Saturday selection meeting, and it is understood that the Karnataka batsman is still recovering from Covid. He is anticipated to be ready for the Asia Cup, which the Asian Cricket Council just moved from Sri Lanka to the UAE (ACC). The competition is slated to begin on August 27 and conclude on September 11.
The T20 World Cup’s last date to submit squad is 15 September. The contenders for the Twenty20 World Cup currently have exactly four more games left against the West Indies until the selectors decide their team for the Asia Cup on August 8. The five-match series, which concludes on August 7 in Florida, US, has India up 1-0. T
