‘I told her tomorrow is my debut & the next day she passed away’: Naseem Shah recalls tragic death of his mother

Young Pakistani bowler Naseem Shah shared the heartbreaking death of his mother just days before making his Test debut against Australia in November 2019.

Shah made an impression with his performance in the Asia Cup and T20 World Cup this year. When his mother died away, Shah, who was 16 at the time, was in Australia.

One of the most gifted pacers now playing for the Pakistan Cricket squad is the young Pakistani cricketer, Naseem Shah. The 19-year-old excelled with his performance in the Asia Cup 2022 and the ICC T20 World Cup after making his Test cricket debut for Pakistan back in November 2019 as a 16-year-old. In the just finished ICC T20 world cup, he put on a display for India. The Kid assisted the team in advancing to the competition’s championship round.

In test cricket, he has delivered excellence in the games for the men in green and even has a Hatrick to his name, which he took against Bangladesh in Feb 2020.

The Youngster’s debut day began on a very sorrowful note because his mother passed away the day before his first game. Due to his national duty, he was unable to attend his mother’s funeral. After his mother passed away during a critical period of his career, he made his test debut. Days after his mother’s death, he made his Test debut. Now, more than three years later, he has opened out extensively about that event.

The right-arm bowler said to Nasser Hussain during an interview for Sky Sports Cricket that he was “very devoted to my mom.” Cricket drove me away from home when I was 12 years old. To Lahore, I relocated. She contacted me the day before my debut, and I informed her, “Tomorrow is my debut.” She never watched television and didn’t understand cricket. But I urged her to watch the game tomorrow because I’ll be taking part and it will be broadcast live on TV.

“She was so happy, she said she would come to Lahore to watch the game. When I woke up, the management came to me and said, ‘your mom has passed away’.”

“For the next six to eight months, I struggled so much. No one thinks about what’s going on inside you. I used to have a lot of medicines; I saw my mom everywhere. I used to think about her a lot. Whenever you play for Pakistan, everyone expects performances from you. I had a lot of injuries during that time as well, so it was a tough time. I learned from it, though. I’m stronger now. My (Pakistan) debut was the toughest day of my life. I can manage when I’m not performing well now, because I know how tough it was,” Naseem added.

The young player last played for Pakistan in the opening Test of the three-game series, which is taking place there right now. Due to a shoulder injury, he was forced to skip the second Test and is now ineligible for the third.

The Cricketer had a very strong past in these last three years to lose his mother in this tragic manner and was not available in the last times with his mother this guilt will always be a piece baggage with the cricketer as Virat Kohli also has a similar past in his crucial part of his career, He also went to play just after his fathers’ funeral. Considering the situation, the players also need to be taken over their stats and performance because their mental health is also a major role to be good on the ground.
