This year, the Duleep Trophy will be reintroduced to the domestic cricket schedule by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The competition, which was last contested in 2019, will be held again using a zonal structure. From September 8 till September 25, it will take place.
The choice was made at the Apex Council meeting on Thursday in Mumbai (July 21). The matches between the five BCCI zones will include a total of five knockout games.
The Irani Cup, a traditional five-day one-off match between the Ranji Trophy champions and the Rest of India, is also returning to the calendar. Due to the pandemic, the game has been postponed for the past two years. The date range is October 1–5, however, the location has not yet been selected. Madhya Pradesh will be one of the teams competing in the event as the reigning Ranji champions.
The lengthy meeting included a number of significant decisions, including the finalization of the 2022–23 season’s schedule with a focus on the Ranji Trophy, which will begin on December 13. The knockout stage will take place from February 1 to 28 and the league stage will last through January 28. The first-class tournament will take place over a span of more than four months, or specifically 126 days, and the BCCI has retained three choices.
Other domestic competitions taking place this year include the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (T20), which will run from October 11 to November 22, the Vijay Hazare Trophy (One Day), which will run from November 12 to December 2, the Men’s U25 One Day Competition, which will run from November 20 to December 10, and the Cooch Behar Trophy (Multi-Day), which will run from November 5 to January 3.
