We Look at Team India Strengths And Weaknesses For Asia Cup 2023

India is the most successful side in the Asia Cup with 7 titles. They have won 6 in the ODI format and 1 in T20Is. India in fact is the only team to win two consecutive editions of the Asia Cup across two different formats. But for all their brilliance in the tournament, they had a forgettable campaign last year. India topped the group stage but they fared poorly in the Super 4. They lost 2 out of the 3 games to crash out of the tournament. It hampered their confidence and it reflected in the subsequent T20 World Cup too.

India’s squad for the tournament:

The Indian team has suffered the wrath of injuries in the last 10-12 months. They are without arguably their biggest match-winner across formats, Rishabh Pant. His absence leaves a big hole for the side to fill. 4 of India’s key players return to the squad but their fitness remains a concern.

KL Rahul remains a doubtful starter and Sanju Samson is the backup reserve. Jasprit Bumrah hasn’t bowled more than 4 overs in a game for more than a year. Prasidh Krishna’s story is pretty similar too. Shreyas Iyer, another vital cog returns after a prolonged time away from the game. It will be interesting to see how India navigate their resources for the tournament.

# Team India Strengths For Asia Cup 2023:

The side has a good mix of experience and youth. In Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Jasprit Bumrah, India have players who know to play the big game. Hardik Pandya and Ravindra Jadeja have evolved into seasoned pros. Kuldeep Yadav’s left-arm spin will ensure India has someone to pick wickets in the middle overs. They have almost their full-strength squad barring Pant. India unexpectedly start as one of the favourites for the tournament.

# Team India Weaknesses For Asia Cup 2023:

India’s top-order at the start of the year looked in sizzling form. Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, and Virat Kohli powered India to clean sweeps over Sri Lanka and New Zealand. But Rahul’s injury means the top order will need to be rejigged. Ishan Kishan is someone who thrives opening the batting. It will be a catch-22 situation for the team in such a scenario.

The team apart from Shreyas Iyer lacks someone who can dominate spin right from ball one. Hardik Pandya and Ravindra Jadeja are players who look to spend time in the middle before they go big. This tentativeness might cost India dear.

# Team India Opportunity For Asia Cup 2023:

India last won a multi-nation tournament 5 years ago in 2018. It was the Asia Cup win that crowned them the champions of Asia rightfully. But India since then has missed a trick in crucial games of such tournaments. The Asia Cup can once again come to the team’s rescue and kickstart a turnaround that the team so clearly needs in fact deserves.

# Team India Threats For Asia Cup 2023:

The pressure to win a multi-team tournament is growing bigger for the Indian team with every missed opportunity. India shouldn’t weigh themselves with this burden when they turn up for the Asia Cup. If they think it is their tournament to lose and play it in this manner, they aren’t away from yet another wreck.

# Expectation:

India alongside Pakistan is expected to make the finals of the tournament. In all fairness, India has been a solid ODI side for more than a decade. The upset reversals to Bangladesh away and Australia at home will seem an aberration if India wins their 8th Asia Cup. If they fail to lift the silverware, their fortunes in the subsequent World Cup will be written off almost immediately.
