We Look at Team India Strengths And Weaknesses For Asia Cup 2023
Sri Lanka had to play the World Cup qualifiers in Zimbabwe. They hardly broke a sweat right throughout the tournament as they easily won the championship. More than their win, it was the ignominy of them needing to play the qualifiers that stood out. Sri Lanka has been one of the more consistent sides especially in limited-overs cricket even until the 2014 T20 World Cup. The nation has hardly made it to any ICC knockouts in the last few years.
Their surprising 2022 Asia Cup glory:
Not many had fancied a Sri Lankan win in the previous edition of the Asia Cup. They didn’t start the tournament on a good note losing their opening game against Afghanistan. But Lanka bounced back to win all of their remaining games. They stunned Pakistan in the finals to conjure a famous win. It was a joy to watch them play with unbridled freedom in the last edition. There will certainly be pressure around them in the ODI edition of the Asia Cup this year. The fact that they are co-hosts will add to the expectations.
# Sri Lanka Strengths For Asia Cup 2023:
There are a lot of players in the Lankan set up who can change the game on their day. They may not be popular household names but they deliver when asked. Charith Asalanka is one such cricketer. He made his presence felt in the 2021 T20 World Cup. Players like Bhanuka Rajapaksa thrive in this environment. He was the star of the show in the Asia Cup finals last year. Their captain who mans the lower middle order, Dasun Shanaka is another brilliant ODI player. It is the all-round depth in the side that makes Sri Lanka dangerous despite recent history not being their best friend.
The pair of Chamika Karunaratne and Wanindu Hasaranga add oomph to the batting down the order. Hasaranga is yet to test the best batters in this format although his numbers in T20Is is sensational. Mahesh Theekshana is another Lankan talent who will be difficult to contend with in this tournament.

For all their enterprise as a talented side in the T20I format, Sri Lanka has done little of note in the ODIs against top-tier teams. They did emerge as winners in the qualifiers but Lanka needs to bring consistency to their game. In a tough group comprising Afghanistan and Bangladesh, Sri Lanka need to bring out their A-game to come out on top.

India was the last side to win two consecutive editions (2016-T20 and 2018-ODI) of the Asia Cup across formats. Sri Lanka can become the second side to achieve this feat if they manage to win the tournament this year. It will give them immense confidence heading into the World Cup.

Sri Lanka will know they will have their task cut out against other formidable Asian sides in the competition. Most of the players in the set up are proven performers in the T20I circuit but are yet to carve their niche in ODIs. This will be a big challenge for Lanka to overcome.
