Cricket West Indies In Financial Crunch, Players Not Received Match Fees

Many cricket boards are suffering from the spread of the coronavirus pandemic. Most prominent boards suggest that players take a pay cut at a crucial time. In contrast, the cricket West Indies have been suffering from losses for a long time, and their players have not been paid their match fees since January this year.

Cricket West Indies is suffering from severe cash shortages in its governing body, so players have not paid. While the retainer of the players has been cleared, the Cricket West Indies (CWI) has admitted that they are not going to pay the match fees.

The home team’s match against Ireland in January and the tour of Sri Lanka in February-March were not paid to the men’s team. Speaking of the women’s side, they also have due to get their match fee for the four matches which they recently played in Australia’s T20 World Cup.

Domestic players have not been paid a large percentage of their match fees for the 2020 West Indies Championship.

‘CWI is facing a tough time financially’: Chief executive officer Johnny Grave

“… Monthly salaries (and allowances) are up to date. Players who competed in the regional first-class competition have not been received their match fees for the eight rounds they have played so far, ”said West Indies Players Association (VIP) secretary Wayne Lewis.

Meanwhile, CWI Chief Executive Officer Johnny Grave has promised to make payments to the players soon. Grave revealed that the huge loss suffered by the board during the tour of Sri Lanka and Bangladesh in the West Indies in 2018, which was the main reason for the board’s cash crunch. According to Grave, the committee lost $ 22 million when it hosted Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.

“Cricket West Indies is struggling financially … there is still outstanding money, and we are trying to make these players’ payments as a priority,” says Grave.

“When we hosted Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, we lost $ 22 million. The media rights agreement paid us less than a million dollars for those two tours,” he added.
