Steve Smith extended his strong form in England, scoring his 32nd test century on the second day of the ongoing second Ashes test.

This was his second century at Lord’s and his eighth in England. Smith has also tied Steve Waugh’s record for the second-most hundreds scored for Australia in test cricket (32). Ricky Ponting, Australia’s former captain, is the only player ahead of them now, with 41 centuries.

The experienced player completed his century in style, smashing a four-of-a-length delivery of Anderson.

Smith got out for 110, and it was the young Tongue again, who did the work for his side. Smith’s innings, however, helped Australia to score big in the first innings of the game, as the visitors are currently in a strong position in the game, having passed the 400-run mark, with skipper Pat Cummins (17*), and Nathan Lyon (1*), still at the crease at the time of writing.

Earlier, Steve Smith accomplished 9000 runs in Test cricket to become the fastest batter in terms of number of matches to attain the feat.

Smith broke West Indies star Brian Lara’s record in the 42nd over of Australia’s first innings on Day 1 to become the fastest batsman in terms of matches taken to enter the nine thousand club in test cricket.

Brian Lara achieved the feat in 101 test matches, while Smith reached the milestone in his 99th outing for Australia.

Smith ranks second only to Sri Lankan legend Kumar Sangakkara in terms of innings played. Smith is in his 174th innings, while Sanga completed the feat of 9,000 Test runs in 172 innings.

India legend Rahul Dravid attained the feat in 176 innings, while Ricky Ponting took 177 innings to reach 9,000 run-mark.

Talking about the match so far, Australia got a good start due to David Warner’s back in form stylish knock of 66. Khwaja, the last match centurion failed to score in the first innings and walked back after just 17.

Both Warner and Khawaja were both taken out by Josh Tongue, while Labuschagne was returned by Ollie Robinson for 46.

Travis Head then gave company to Smith and played a solid 77-run knock in just 73 balls much like in a ‘Bazball’fashion.

Australia is currently commanding the series following a two-wicket win at Edgbaston, and they appear to be in strong place in the second test as well.
