Australia’s New Head Coach for Women Cricket Team
Australia’s New Head Coach: Cricket Australia announced on Tuesday that Shelly Nitschke has been named as the head coach of the Australian women’s squad. Since joining as an assistant under Matthew Mott in 2018, the 45-year-old has been a part of that group. She previously served as the interim coach after Mott’s term ended during the 2022 World Cup.
Nitschke, one of the best all-rounders in the world, made his Australian debut in 2005 at the age of 28 and went on to play 80 one-day internationals, 36 Twenty20 internationals, and six Test matches. With her left-arm orthodox bowling, she amassed more than 3,000 runs and over 150 wickets.
In her seven-year international playing career, which spanned from 2004 to 2011, Nitschke played in 6 Tests, 80 ODIs, and 36 T20Is. Since her retirement, Nitschke has held several coaching positions with South Australia and Adelaide Strikers.
Following the team’s tight victory over India in the finals of the first-ever women’s cricket competition at the quadrennial event last month, interim coach Nitschke led Australia to a historic Commonwealth Games gold medal.
After getting selected as the new head coach of the women’s team Shelley Nitschke said in a statement that “I’m honored to have been given this opportunity to lead the team full-time and to continue to build on the legacy created by Matthew Mott.
When asked about her past roles as an assistant coach, he said that “While I enjoyed my time working as an assistant coach, I feel the time is right to step up and lead this group in what’s shaping up as a new era with a new-look coaching group and the retirement of Rachael Haynes.
Finally, she concluded by saying “The loss of Rach will no doubt be felt, but it presents a great opportunity for others to put their hands up both from a leadership perspective as well as with the bat and in the field.”
