Rohit Sharma all set to break Ricky Ponting’s record of most consecutive wins in International Cricket

Indian skipper Rohit Sharma is all set to break Australia Ricky Ponting’s most consecutive win in international cricket as the fearless captain is just 2 wins away to achieve this milestone.

Before the England series, Rohit had 17 consecutive international wins under his belt. But after beating the English side in the first two T20 games, Sharma’s tally moved to 19.

If India completes a series sweep on Sunday at Trent Bridge, Rohit would be able to tie Ricky Ponting, the former captain of Australia, for the most consecutive victories as captain in men’s international cricket, who holds the record of winning 20 consecutive games.

As T20I captain, Rohit already has the record for the straightest victories. He led India against Bangladesh in 2019 to begin this winning streak. As captain, Rohit has now prevailed in 19 straight matches across all forms, 14 of which were T20Is.

When was Rohit Sharma appointed as captain of Team India?

Rohit was appointed as team India’s limited-over captain after Virat Kohli left his T20I captaincy last year. Kohli was later sacked as ODI captain to make a one captain both with ball formats. BCCI then handed the test captaincy to Rohit after Kohli stepped down from tests captaincy in January 2022.

The Indian skipper was given rest for the home T20I series against South Africa in joined. He later was unable to play in the fifth Test against England because he tested positive for Covid-19. In his absence The BCCI handed over the captaincy to Jasprit. India faced a seven wicket defeat in the match as England managed to end the series on level note 2-2.

For the ODI series against the West Indies later this month, the BCCI has once more rested Rohit, Kohli, Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, and Rishabh Pant. Shikhar Dhawan will lead the team for the three-match series with Ravindra Jadeja as his deputy.

The T20I series win against England boosts Indian player’s confidence for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup, which is scheduled to begin on October 16 in Australia.
