He is more than 500 runs clear of the next best on the list. Tendulkar played 6 editions of the World Cup and this factor sure has a bearing on his numbers. But he is also among this who holds the highest average (56.95) in the tournament.

There is a lot riding on the 2023 ODI World Cup as the format battles for relevance. If the batters set alight the tournament in the batting-friendly Indian conditions, there may be new entrants in the highest run-getters club at the end of the World Cup.
We look at active batters who have scored the most runs in ODI World Cups:
#5 Rohit Sharma – 978
He has played just 17 games yet makes the cut into the top 5 run-scorers list in the World Cup among active batters. Rohit Sharma was the highest run-scorer in the 2019 edition of the tournament as he plundered 648 runs. He created a tournament record of notching up 5 centuries in a single edition.
Sharma will lead the Indian side in the upcoming edition. If he gets going then expect him to climb this chart rapidly and Indian fans too will be in a happy space. It will definitely bulk up his already impressive World Cup tally of 978 runs at an average of 65.20.
#4 David Warner – 992
Pretty similar to Sharma, Warner has also played 18 World Cup games. He too has had a telling impact opening the batting. Warner was part of Australia’s World Cup-winning side in 2015. He scored 600+ runs in the 2019 edition forcing his way into the top four of this list. The ODI format looks like his best bet as he would want to finish his career on a high. Warner aggregates 992 runs at an average of 62 comprising 4 centuries.
#3 Martin Guptill – 995
The New Zealand management for the major part of the last 12 months have looked at Finn Allen as their first-choice opener. Martin Guptill has been warming the benches. He was the backup opener even in the 2022 T20 World Cup. But with Kane Williamson being ruled out there is a chance for Guptill to comeback at the top.
His experience will be invaluable for the Kiwis. He is third among the modern-day batters in the highest run-getters list of ODI World Cups. Guptill’s number comprises an epic 237 which makes almost one-fourth of his tally (995 runs).
#2 Virat Kohli – 1,030
He became the first Indian to score a century in his maiden World Cup game in 2011. Virat Kohli was instrumental in India’s World Cup in that edition. His numbers have been good in this tournament but one certainly expects more from him. In a format that he bosses with ease, Kohli will admit he is yet to have a high-flying World Cup. Yet he is second on the list among active batters. It speaks volumes about the ODI player that he is. Kohli aggregates 1,030 runs in 26 games at an average of 46.81.
#1 Shakib Al Hasan – 1,146
It might come as a surprise to many that it is Shakib Al Hasan who tops this contemporary list. The veteran of 4 editions has seen the highs and lows of Bangladesh cricket in the World Cup. He was one of the top scorers in the previous edition in England. Hasan will fancy another 500-run tournament as he will get to bat in familiar conditions. He is currently 106 runs ahead of Kohli as he leads with 1,146 runs to his name in 29 games at an average of 45.84.
