Will Mohit Sharma’s death bowling heroics in IPL earn him a spot in Indian T20 WC squad?

Mohit Sharma in India T20 WC squad

Mohit Sharma in India T20 WC squad: India is aiming to select the most balanced team for the T20 World Cup 2024 to break their ICC trophy drought, and Mohit Sharma’s death bowling performance in the ongoing IPL could earn him a place in squad.

The T20 World Cup is 2 months away from now, and the Indian team will be selected during the last week of April. With Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj are the two best pacers most likely to feature in the squad, the biggest question will be who will fill the third and fourth positions.

As Mohammed Shami is not available for selection due to injury, the selectors are relying on players’ IPL performances to fill the remaining berths.

Mohit Sharma, who was the second highest wicket-taker in IPL 2023, started from where he left and has delivered back-to-back solid performance in this season so far.

The most important factor going in Mohit’s favour is his variation skills, which is essential in T20 cricket specially in death overs. The right arm medium pacer not just restricts the opposition to scoring big runs but takes wickets at quick intervals too.

With T20 World Cup to be played in West Indies and USA, and the nature of the pitches in West Indies being on the slower side, Mohit’s skill to ball slow deliveries can help India big time.

Mohit has grabbed 6 wickets in 3 IPL games this season so far at an economy of 7.75.

Apart from Mohit, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Arshdeep Singh, Avesh Khan and Mukesh Kumar will also remain in WC contention, but it all depends on their IPL performance.

Mohit last played for Indian in T20Is was in 2015, and whether he makes the cut or not will continue to be a subject of intense discussion.
