Jaydev Unadkat, who recently found a place in Indian team after 12 years, stunned everyone on his comeback to the Ranji Trophy, as he started 2023 by taking a hat-trick in his first over as the Delhi-Saurashtra match got off to an exciting start in Rajkot.

After Delhi’s captain Dhull decided to bat after winning the toss, Unadkat, the captain of Saurashtra, removed Dhruv Shorey, Vaibhav Rawal, and Yash Dhull off the third, fourth, and fifth deliveries of the game. The previous earliest hat-trick in a game occurred by Karnataka fast bowler Vinay Kumar in the 2017–18 quarterfinal versus Mumbai, whose hat-trick was spanned across the first and third overs. This was the first first-over hat-trick in the history of the Ranji Trophy.

Unadkat added two more dismissals by the end of his second over to seal his 21st five-wicket haul in first-class cricket. Delhi were struggling at 5 for 6 when he caught Lalit Yadav lbw for a four-ball duck, and Unadkat’s statistics read 2-0-5-5.
