The most favorite teams in the Indian Premier League, the franchises of Mumbai and Chennai made the audience relive the moments of their old battles held previously. On Thursday, the 59th match between Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians can be considered to be one of the low-scoring games in the 15th season of IPL after the Sunrisers Hyderabad and Royal Challengers Bangalore match.

In their last match for IPL 2022, both the teams were aggressive and this made Wankhede’s deck turn completely into a bowling pitch. It was Mumbai bowlers who launched a scathing attack against the yellow army initially. After winning the toss, the Rohit Sharma-led team opted to bowl first and the decision seems to be a rightful one.

The key bowler, Daniel Sams, was successful in removing the top three batsmen where Gaikwad left the crease by scoring only seven runs, and Devon Conway and Moeen Ali took the pavilion route for golden ducks. Riley Meredith and Kumar Kartikeya took two wickets each. Meanwhile, Bumrah’s contribution in removing Robin Uthappa made a good impact on CSK, with the team getting all-out for a low score of 97 runs.

The skipper MS Dhoni conceded 36 runs and remained a not-out batsman. During the second innings, the CSK was seemingly very decisive in confining the MI batsmen from scoring runs. To an extent, the yellow army was successful initially, but Tilak Varma’s batting prowess made the Mumbai players to register a victory.

Mukesh Choudhary took three wickets which also includes the IPL’s expensive player, Ishan Kishan. Simarjeet Singh removed Rohit Sharma and Moeen Ali plucked Hrithik Shokeen’s wicket.

At some point, CSK was almost on the verge of sealing a victory, but it was Varma who made the Mumbai’s boat reach the shore. The MI’s registered a win against CSK by five wickets remaining and 31 balls left.

Speaking during the post-match presentation, CSK captain MS Dhoni anything below 130 is difficult to defend “I asked the bowlers to show a lot of character, put the opposition under pressure and forget about the result. I thought both the fast-bowlers did really well. I think a game like this really helps them. Irrespective of how we start we need to have the same attitude and that’s what you need in the shorter formats,” he said.

Mumbai Indians captain Rohit Sharma said losing wickets upfront was a tense moment in the middle. “However it was just about keeping calm and getting the job done. After losing the wickets at the start, we were just a little calm and got the job done at the end, which was pleasing,” he said.

When asked about Tilak Varma, he said he is been brilliant. “Playing for the first year, having such a calm head is amazing. He is going to be an all-format player for India pretty soon. He has got the technique and temperament, which is most important at the highest stage. There is hunger too. He is on the right path,” he added.

Player of the match:

Daniel Sams (Mumbai Indians): 3/16 (4) & 1 (6)
