India Squad for ICC ODI World Cup 2023
The Board of Control for Cricket in India declared the 15-member squad on Tuesday. Team India Captain and the chief selector Ajit Agarkar addressed a press conference today and officially unveiled the names on the last day of the squad announcement date set by ICC.
Rohit Sharma as expected will lead the side, while Hardik Pandya will serve as his deputy in the prestigious tournament, which will be held in India.
The selectors have decided to go with seven batters, four all-rounders and four specialist bowers formula.
Rohit Sharma and veteran Virat will remain the most experienced batters in the team. Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul are present in the squad, while Suryakumar Yadav also managed to make the cut.
Hardik Pandya and Ravindra Jadeja will be the best all-rounder duo, while Axar Patel and Shardul Thakur have been picked as the third and fourth all-rounders, respectively.
Jasprit Burmah will be leading the pace department for India. Mohd. Shami and Mohd. Siraj are the other fast bowlers in the squad.
Two wicket-keeper batter KL Rahul and Ishan Kishan are part of the Indian team, while Sanju Samson, who was picked as the back-up keeper for the ongoing Asia Cup squad has been left out for the marquee event. Apart from Sanju, Tilak Varma has also been left out.
There were few speculations around Yuzvendra Chahal’s inclusion in the team, but he didn’t get a call, as India squad will feature three-left arm spinners, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav.
Team India will start their World Cup campaign against Australia on Oct 8 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
