IND Vs ENG: Should Captain Rohit Sharma Retire? A Team’s Failure is Not Single Player’s Responsibility

Should Rohit Sharma Retire

We are expecting a hundred memes on Rohit Sharma, on his fitness, on his captaincy and his batting, Should Rohit Sharma Retire? The team may have reached the semifinal ground in the T20 World Cup 2022 but there was a spark missing. It became evident when they played a worthy team like England. Here we have discussed Should Rohit Sharma Retire?

Team India was completely outplayed by the opponents and lost by a margin of a whopping 10 wickets. There are a lot of things to blame for this not just one person. The captain is said to be as good as the team. We can say that there are a lot of improvements to be made individually but there were few key players that were missing in the team and that was a big concern for team India.

The Bumrah Factor

There were so many comments about Bumrah even before the T20 World Cup 2022 started about the absence of Bumrah. And how it was not possible to win the cup without him in Australia. Bumrah has been the part of Team India’s winning journey but if we were to look at the stats, they don’t say that is the only responsible bowler from the team. Even though Bumrah missed many matches in the year 2022, India won all of its T20I series. So ideally his absence should not have mattered. But since none of the bowlers were able to get India required breakthrough, Bumrah was missed and it became a big problem for India.

KL Rahul’s Form

We have heard KL Rahul say that he does not believe that he is out of form or his strike rate is low. But the stats don’t lie and we need him to confront the truth. KL is a crucial part of Team India. After his comeback from the surgery, he was struggling to maintain his strike rate in the longer innings. And then we saw him getting out in the early 10s and it did not help the Indian side through the World Cup. Apart from one 50+ score, he struggled thoroughly and India had to pay back for it.

Rohit Sharma: The Captain who SHOULD lead with an example

Rohit Sharma has been a key player for India for a long time. None needs an introduction to what he has achieved. But for some time now, we have seen him flunking and failing. His partnership with KL was a big failure. Both players gave their wicket in the powerplay overs which pushed India back in most matches. This also put pressure on the Indian middle order. Unlike Jos Buttler, Rohit failed to lead with an example and it costed India eventually.

No Big Show for Dinesh Karthik

Ahead of IPL 2022, Dinesh Karthik had told he wants to do something special for the country, one last time. He hinted at India’s selection for T20 World Cup 2022. He did perform the finisher’s role upto the mark before the tournament but failed to impress through it. In the matches that he got the chance to play, he did not perform upto the mark. In the rest he was rested. The team lacked the spark and we saw it evident in Karthik as well.

No Swing King Bhuvi

Bhuvneshwar Kumar has performed extremely well in the hard pitches that are favorable for pacers, around the world. But he lacked swing in this T20 World Cup that we are used to seeing from him. He did bowl a fair number of dot balls but did not take wickets which was a problem for India.

No Axar Patel as All-rounder

Axar Patel is called an allrounder. But his role was just of the spinner in the T20 World Cup 2022. He only took 3 wickets and scored just 9 runs in the 3 innings he got chance to bat. This is not what you expect from an allrounder and we really need a replacement of Jadeja in the coming years.

No Quality Ashwin

Ashwin is considered the most tactical bowler of the side. But he completely failed to show his experienced side in Australia. He took 6 wickets in 6 matches. But most of his wickets came against teams that were not considered at par with them. Against the big teams, Ashwin failed to impress and India was left with no variety spinners.

The team is only as good as the players in the team. If half of the team is of consistent non performers, we can hardly expect the team to win. A lot is based on the Captain and the coach but we cannot hold them fully responsible for team’s failure.
