Highest Win percentage As Captain In WTC

Highest Win % As Captain In WTC:There have been many inspirational captains in Test cricket. Few have defined eras while few built a solid foundation. Leaders like Clive Lloyd, Allan Border, Steve Waugh, Sourav Ganguly, and Ricky Ponting are known for their leadership as much as their playing skills. It is an often repeated quote in cricket that says the leader is just as good as the team. But elite cricketers do know the difference between a good and a great leader. There have been many interesting captaincy styles on display in the WTC too.

We look at captains with the highest win percentage in WTC:

[Qualification – minimum 10 Tests]

#5 Kane Williamson – 53.84

The former New Zealand skipper is highly regarded for his batting talent as well as his leadership skills. Kane Williamson took over from where Brendon McCullum left. He consolidated New Zealand’s position at home. The team became virtually unbeatable at home under Williamson.

It was their home wins that helped them play the first WTC Final in 2021. Williamson-led side emerged as the inaugural WTC champions. He is fifth on the list of captains with the highest win percentage (53.84%). Williamson captained the Kiwis in 13 WTC games.

#4 Tim Paine – 57.14

He took over the captaincy duties in tumultuous times and his captaincy stint ended on similar lines. In between these times, Tim Paine led the side admirably. He became the first Australian captain in 18 years to draw a series in England in 2019. Paine’s lowest moments as captain came against India twice in two home series. Australia lost both the Test series to a spirited Indian side. Despite such lows, Paine maintained a solid win percentage of 53.84 after leading the side in 14 WTC Tests.

#3 Pat Cummins – 57.89

He has gone one better than Tim Paine at least currently. Pat Cummins is the first Australian captain to win two consecutive Tests in England in the last 20 years. He led the Australian side to Ashes glory at home winning 4-0 against a deflated English side. Cummins-led Australia won the WTC in 2023. They are arguably the most complete Test side at the moment. Cummins has a win percentage of 57.89 in 19 WTC Tests as captain.

#2 Virat Kohli – 63.63

India under Virat Kohli was undoubtedly the best Test team of the current generation. The team went on to achieve some astonishing results in good one-and-a-half cycles of WTC under Kohli. They lost a solitary Test at home beating every side that toured and won every single home series. India was leading the series 2-1 under Kohli in England. They lost 1 and won 1 game under him in South Africa. His numbers clearly indicate he was ahead of the pack. Kohli captained the side in 22 games winning 14 of them with a win percentage of 63.63.

#1 Ben Stokes – 71.42

England had won just 1 out of the last 17 Tests they had played before Ben Stokes took over as captain. Brendon McCullum was appointed the head coach and England adopted an ultra-aggressive approach in Tests. The results soon started following as England brushed side New Zealand. They defeated India to level the series 2-2.

England tasted success against South Africa and whitewashed Pakistan 3-0 in their den. They have come back in the 3rd Ashes Test to show that they are no pushovers. Stokes has played an integral role in England’s awe-inspiring success in the last 15-odd months. He has a win percentage of 71.42 in 14 WTC games of which England has won 10!
