WOMEN’S ASIA CUP 2022: Pakistan Beats Srilanka by 5 Wickets

Pakistan vs Sri Lanka Match Highlights

The thrilling Women’s Asia Cup 2022 is happening and it is all fun going fun and games. The two spirited teams Srilanka and Pakistan met to decide which one is the better team. The Green team emerged winners as they beat Srilanka by 5 wickets. Omaima Sohail was given the player of the match award for taking 5 wickets. Let us look at Pakistan vs Sri Lanka Match Highlights in detail.

Sri Lanka’s Innings Build-up

With 47 runs scored during the powerplay, Sri Lanka got off to the best start of the tournament. Hasini Perera was keeping Chamari Athapaththu company as she enjoyed pushing boundaries for amusement. But the Sri Lankan captain’s demise let off a torrent. After Athapaththu lost to a low full ball that landed to long-on, Sri Lanka simply collapsed.

The wickets were falling like nine pins after Omaima Sohail picked up a fifer in just three overs. The Lankans were pushed from 58/1 to 78/8 in the 13th over. A brief cameo by Oshadi Ranasinghe near the finish raised her team’s total above 110.

SL undoubtedly underperformed following their strong start, but this amount is still useful as we’ve witnessed throughout the competition. However, the outcome really doesn’t matter because it’s very certain that the two teams will square off in the semifinals. That said, neither side will want to give up any psychological momentum given the circumstances.

Pakistan’s Fight-back

There were numerous ebbs and flows in the momentum, so this truly might have gone either way. Athapaththu has her daughters gathered together, presumably to inform them that they weren’t entirely off-base. They undoubtedly weren’t. However, their fielding was disappointing and it cost them dearly. At a vital point in the run chase, the skipper herself bowled a poor over, in addition to dropped catches and careless efforts.

Pakistan had to battle through to the last end despite everything. They had some breathing room after a strong start, but they were definitely knocked back by regular wickets, notably that of Maroof and Sohail.

Senior pro-Dar was called upon to stabilize the situation, and as she has done so frequently throughout her career, the all-rounder stepped up and found a capable partner in Riaz who delivered some crucial blows. The pair appeared to have it under control, but no chase is simple on these slow, low pitches.

Although Sri Lanka would have liked a repeat of their victory over Bangladesh, young Naseem wasn’t having it. After two devastating blows, the game was over. What a fantastic game, though! SL will also be disappointed with their batting effort; they were aiming for a score of 130-140 but ended up scoring less than 115.

Semi-finals will start on 13 October. One of those games will be a rematch between these two teams. In the other semifinal contest, India will play Thailand. We can only hope that the semifinal matches are even half as exciting as today’s match.
