IND vs ENG: Sunil Gavaskar Appreciates Virat Kohli’s Captaincy

The 1st Test match between India and England commenced on Friday at the M. A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. The match features the return of skipper Virat Kohli, experienced pacer, Ishant Sharma and India’s pace spearhead, Jasprit Bumrah into the playing XI. While Virat Kohli missed the last 3 Tests owing to paternity leave. Ishant Sharma missed the entire series owing to an injury and Bumrah had to miss the final Test at Gabba, Brisbane owing to a tired muscle. The fans were excited to see their favourite players back in action.

Bumrah makes an instant impression:

Jasprit Bumrah made an immediate impact in his first home Test. He had opener Rory Burns nick the very first delivery he bowled in his first home Test. But unfortunately for Bumrah, Rishabh Pant grassed the opportunity. Bumrah wasn’t done though. He came roaring back in his second spell to dismiss Dan Lawrence just before lunch on Day 1.

Legendary Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar was in the commentary box when Virat Kohli brought Jasprit Bumrah back into the attack to counter newcomer batsman Dan Lawrence. The move worked immediately for the hosts as Lawrence’s stay at the crease lasted just five deliveries. Lawrence was trapped in front of stumps by Bumrah, as the visitors lost their second wicket in succession after opener Rory Burns. The session which was being dominated by England suddenly turned in India’s favour.

Sunil Gavaskar appreciates Kohli’s captaincy:

Sunil Gavaskar appreciated Virat Kohli’s move of bringing back Bumrah in his second spell in the match. The legendary cricketer called Virat Kohli’s decision a “very good move” to bring Bumrah into the attack at that stage. England captain Joe Root won the toss and elected to bat first. The visitors were looking in complete control until Ashwin broke the opening stand by dismissing Rory Burns. Bumrah soon got into the act and got his maiden wicket on home soil by removing Dan Lawrence.

It is Bumrah’s first Test match in India as the pacer has played all his Tests away from home. He debuted against South Africa in South Africa in February 2018. It took Bumrah 17 away Tests to make his home debut. He has played Tests in South Africa, England, Australia, West Indies, and New Zealand. Bumrah had 79 wickets before this one and Burns was his 80th Test wicket.
