100+ Runs Between Lunch And Tea

Indian batters lunch tea session records: Zak Crawley scored a fantastic 189 in the first innings of the fourth Test against Australia. He broke many records en route to his knock. One of the special records he broke during the innings was scoring hundred-plus runs (106) between lunch and tea. England scored 178 runs in the session and Crawley scored 106 of those. There are very few batters in world cricket who have achieved this feat. There are few Indian batters who are part of this elite club.

Indian batters lunch tea session records: Indian batters who have scored 100+ runs between lunch and tea session:

#5 Mohammad Azharuddin – 103

He was regarded as one of the finest batsmen of his generation. There have been very few players who were as gifted as Mohammad Azharuddin. His wristwork along with Mark Waugh was the best in the business. Azhar for a long time was the only Indian batter part of this list. He smashed 103 runs in a Test against England in 1990. The venue incidentally was Manchester. Azharuddin eventually ended up making 179 runs off 243 balls comprising 21 fours and 1 six.

#4 Shikhar Dhawan – 106

It was his debut Test innings and Shikhar Dhawan set the international stage on fire. Opening the innings he took on the Australian bowling right from the word go. Dhawan cut, drove, pulled, and danced down the ground to reach his maiden ton off just 85 balls. In a maniac session between lunch and tea, Dhawan managed to score 106 runs. He missed out on a well-deserved double hundred (187) but his carnage was enough for India to eke out a win.

#3 Virender Sehwag – 108

South Africa had posted a huge total (540) batting first in Chennai. India got off to a strong start in response on day 2. Virender Sehwag though came into his own on day 3. He took the complete toll of a South African attack comprising Dale Steyn, Makhaya Ntini, Morne Morkel, and Jacques Kallis. Sehwag hit 108 runs between the lunch and the tea session. He broke his own individual record of highest score in Tests (Indian) in this innings. Sehwag perished for 319 off just 304 balls! It remains the quickest triple-century ever in Tests!

#2 Virender Sehwag – 109

Only a player of Virender Sehwag’s calibre can feature on such a list twice. The opener was imperious touch in the Lahore Test against Pakistan in 2006. On a featherbed of a wicket, Pakistan had declared at 679-7, scoring at a rate of 4.73. India’s response was even better. The game was drawn with India’s score reading 410-1 in 77.2 overs. India scored at a rate of 5.30 per over. It was mainly down to that man, Sehwag who scored 254 runs in just 247 balls. Sehwag scored 194 runs in boundaries, a knock comprising 47 fours and 1 six. Sehwag hit 109 runs in a single session between lunch and tea in this Test.

#1 Shikhar Dhawan – 126

There is something about Delhi openers that they end up scoring runs at such a breathtaking pace. No other batter in the last 69 years has scored more runs between lunch and tea than Shikhar Dhawan did in this Test. In the opening Test of the series in Galle, Shikhar Dhawan smashed 190 off just 168 balls to stun Sri Lanka. 124 off those runs came in boundaries (31 fours). Dhawan smashed 126 runs between lunch and tea to completely outplay the host nation. The left-hander should be very proud of this record!
