England Cricket Team

England Cricket Team performance in 2022: England cricket has experienced a lot this year, from the difficult loss to the West Indies at the beginning of the year to the start of the new era under Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum in tests, and Jos Buttler and Matthew Mott in white-ball cricket to their second T20 World Cup victory.

It was not less than a drama movie, so without wasting any time, let’s dive into England’s white ball journey in the year 2022.

England Cricket Team new ODI and T20 captain

Jos Buttler was picked to take over as captain after the 2019 World Cup winning captain Eoin Morgan announced his retirement from international cricket in June 2022. Buttler, who for a while served as Eoin Morgan’s deputy, is still looking for his first ODI series success as a regular captain.

Under his leadership, England lost 2-1 to India in T20Is and afterwards suffered a 2-1 loss to India in ODIs. South Africa arrived in England to play three T20Is, three ODIs, and a two-match test series immediately following India’s trip of the country.

The English side managed to tie the ODI series after losing the first game, while third one was called off. They lost the T20 series by 2-1, managed to win test series, though!

Buttler was not the captain on Pakistan’s tour, when the English played seven-T20Is there, and recorded a 4-3 victory.

He, however, came back with full charge and started the Australia campaign with 2-0 win over Australia in T20Is right before the T20 World Cup.

They began their World journey on a high note with a solid win by 5 wickets over Afghanistan. But they have yet to witness the drama in the marquee event, as they lost to their neighbours Ireland by DLS method in their second game.

Road was tough to reach semis, with big teams in their group, but the Buttler-led side defeated all odds that stacked against them and claimed a berth for the semis.

The challenge in semis was also big as they have to face India, but they made that game a cakewalk for them and outplayed the no.1 ranked side in T20 by 10 wickets to reach the finals, and the rest is history!

England Cricket Team performance in 2022: T20 World Cup 2022

After facing many ups and downs in the group stage, the English team was just one step away to claim their second T20 title, but the challenge in front of them was Pakistan.

Opting to bowl, England bowlers didn’t allow Pakistani batter to open their arms and restricted them to just 137 on the big night at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground.

The victory was not as easy as it looks like, as the English side struggled hard. Ben Stokes the star of 2019 World Cup final, once again came to rescue his side and played an unbeaten knock of 52 in 49 to hand his side T20 World Cup.

This was England’s second T20 World Cup title, having won before in 2010. Apart from that, the English team also created a unique record of being the champions of 50-over world cup and T20 world cup at the same time.
