Invited to bat first, England scored 282 runs in 50 overs, with Joe Root leading the way with 77 and Jos Buttler being the second-best batter with 43 off 42.

Chasing a 280-plus on a big day, the runners-up from the previous edition lost their first wicket in the second over of the game, but Devon Conway and Rachin Ravindra not only steadied the ship but took complete control of the game and smashed boundaries all over the stadium and on top of that they both recorded unbeaten centuries in the process.

England got off to a steady start with 40 for no loss before Matt Henry dismissed Malan for 20, while Santner then got rid off Bairstow to put the English side under pressure.

Harry Brook was looking in T20 mood and had already hit a four and a six against Ravindra but his hunger to strike another big hit cost him the wicket.

Moeen Ali also failed to make a mark and walked back after playing a knock of 11.

Skipper Jos Buttler then joined Joe Root in the middle and did a 70-run partnership for the fifth wicket before Matt Henry again provided his side with a breakthrough.

Looking in trouble, England managed to shoot 282 thanks to Joe Root’s 77.

Matt Henry was the pick of the bowler for New Zealand as he took three wickets for the kiwis. Mitchell Santner and Glenn Phillips also took 2-2 wickets each, while Boult and Ravindra shared 1-1.

Will Young and Devon Conway opened the proceedings for New Zealand in a 280-plus target, with things looking for a 50:50 battle between the last world cup finalists, England showed their dominance after dismissing Will Young in the second over.

The defending champions then took the game lightly as they would win the game easily but Devon Conway and Rachin Ravindra, playing in place of regular skipper Kane Williamson set the stage on fire and struck flawless boundaries all over the park.

The Kiwis in no time touched the 100-run mark, then 150, 200 and even 250, as England failed to get rid off both the Blackcaps batters.

Conway, who plays for Chennai Super Kings in Indian Premier League, knows the conditions at Ahmedabad well, and showed his class today to play an unbeaten knock of 151 off 121 balls.

The young Will Young, on the other hand, also smashed a ton and remained not out in the process with 123 off 96.
