England vs Australia 1st Ashes Test Match – Day 1 Update
England declare at 393/8, while Australia’s openers stay calm at the end of day 1 Stumps for 14/0
1st Ashes – Day 1: On the first day of the first Test, England declared with eight wickets remaining and plenty of time before the end of the play. Despite Joe Root scoring an unbeaten 112 in his 30th Test century, England only reached 393 for 8 before ending their innings. After winning the toss, England decided to bat, and Zak Crawley got things going with a boundary off the first pitch.
Australian pacers continued to offer the bait with their intentions apparent and in the expected directions. Early on, instead of operating off-stump, they did not challenge the stumps. But the first wicket came when Ben Duckett edged Josh Hazlewood to the “keeper”. It took some time for the second but they broke the partnership, while with a so-called bazball strategy, runs started to come in from one end.
Aggressive Start to the First Test Match
The first ball of the morning from Australia captain Pat Cummins was blasted through the covers for four by England opener Zak Crawley, who appeared determined to respond to that on his own. This pushed the world Test champions’ captain to take a defensive stance early on.
Ollie Pope and Crawley put together a 70-run partnership for the second wicket. While England continued to play aggressively despite losing three wickets in the early session. After lunch, Harry Brook assumed leadership of the assault. The powerful hitter didn’t wait for the poor throws, he continued to attack Lyon and Boland, hitting them for boundries.

England Batters Showing Their Dominance on the very first day
Australia used five bowlers on day-1, and none of them averaged less than four runs per over. Lyon, who bowled the majority of the overs (29), also gave away 149 runs despite taking four wickets.
It was Jonny Bairstow’s turn to join the gathering shortly after Tea. He hogged the majority of the strike and, with his aggressive play, knocked the Australian bowlers on their heels. Prior to being struck out by Lyon, Bairstow scored 78 runs off of 78 balls. The attack was then led by Joe Root, who hit a quick 118* off of 152 balls.
Finally, English bowlers had a four-over opportunity to attack the Australians, but David Warner and Usman Khawaja made sure there was no damage and they reached Day-1 stumps with 14 runs scored.
