World Cup 2023: Players Who Could Still Make It

Players who could still make it to the World Cup squad: There is less than a month to go before the mega event of the year to kickstart. Teams across the world are busy fine tuning their preparations. They have announced the provisional squads for the World Cup. There are a few names who have missed out from the initial list. These players have been proven performers over the years. Their omission from the squad has raised a lot of eyebrows. But there is a belief that these players will eventually find a spot in the World Cup before the event starts.

We look at few players who could still make it to the World Cup squad:

#3 Harry Brook

He might not have set the ODI record books on fire so far. But Harry Brook is a serious talent. He already has proven himself in the toughest format of the game. Brook played one brilliant knock after the other in the Test series against Pakistan. He also found his groove in an enthralling Ashes series. It was largely expected that Brook would easily slot in the starting fifteen.

But the imminent return of Ben Stokes to the squad meant that Brook had to make his way out. He immediately has put on a show in the series against New Zealand. Brook has made himself almost undroppable for the World Cup.

#2 Marnus Labuschagne

He is one of the most hardworking cricketers in the world currently. Marnus Labuschagne is one of the top Test batters averaging over 53 but his ODI numbers are far from impressive. It didn’t come as a big surprise that Marnus was left out from the World Cup squad. Australia’s squad had a presence of multiple allrounders who add different dimensions to a side. It appeared that the door was firmly shut on Marnus.

But as luck would have it, all it took was a concussion to Cameroon Green to get him back into the reckoning. He played a fantastic knock against South Africa in the first ODI to help Australia win from a precarious situation. Marnus made another valuable contribution in the second ODI to stamp Australia’s dominance. The selectors will now be forced to include a player who is such fine form.

#1 Sanju Samson

There has been enough debate on the non-inclusion of Sanju Samson in the World Cup squad. He arguably has better ODI numbers than Suryakumar Yadav. Samson is someone who doesn’t mind going on the offensive as soon as he enters the crease. This is a quality that teams most likely will need in a tournament like the World Cup. In a high-pressure game, an impactful cameo will go a long way in turning the fate of the game. Samson may still be in it as Shreyas Iyer’s injury concerns don’t seem to be getting over anytime soon.
