Dhawal Kulkarni News: All Set To Join The MI Squad.
Frustrated by their pacers’ never-ending struggles, Mumbai Indians have signed veteran campaigner Dhawal Kulkarni, who might be considered for the final IPL games if he performs well in training. The 33-year-old right-arm bowler has joined the team’s bubble and will begin training soon, according to IPL sources.
The bowler who was not bought during the auctions of this season’s IPL, so far, was part of the Star Sports Commentary unit. He’s expected to resume his on-field duties now that the five-time winners have signed him despite their dismal performance in the current tournament.
The 33-year-old pacer, who has 86 wickets in 92 IPL games for MI, Rajasthan Royals, and the now-defunct Gujarat Lions, has represented India and has a wealth of experience. Kulkarni received INR 75 lakh from MI in the 2020 auction, and he continued to represent the team in 2021, although for only one game. According to reports, MI captain Rohit Sharma was keen to add Dhawal Kulkarni to the MI team in order to provide assistance for Jasprit Bumrah on the other end. MI has yet to win a game in the IPL 2022 season, and they are currently ranked last in the points standings.
“MI skipper Rohit Sharma was keen on adding Kulkarni to strengthen their pace attack. Being from Mumbai, he’s aware of how to bowl in Mumbai and Pune, where IPL-15 is being held. Barring Jasprit Bumrah, all the MI pacers have struggled badly this season, and that has been a large factor which had led to the team losing its first six games to endure its worst start in any IPL edition,” a source was quoted as saying by the Times of India.
This season has been tough for the other pacers as well. Left-arm pacers Jaydev Unadkat (six wickets and 190 runs surrendered in five games) and Daniel Sams (six wickets and 209 runs conceded in five games) have both had disappointing seasons. In the game against Chennai Super Kings, Unadkat was chastised by legendary Mahendra Singh Dhoni after failing to defend 17 runs. Tymal Mills (six wickets and 190 runs surrendered in five games) and Basil Thampi (five wickets and 152 runs conceded in five games) haven’t been very impressive.
Riley Meredith was also employed in two games, although he only got three wickets and gave up 65 runs. Kulkarni is a regular in the Mumbai Ranji Trophy and has also competed in the IPL. After making his debut in 2008, he has played in 92 matches and captured 86 wickets. Kulkarni has primarily played for the Rajasthan Royals, but he has also appeared in games for the Mumbai Indians and the Gujarat Lions. After losing eight games in a row, the Mumbai Indians are already out of contention for the play-offs.
