Rohit Sharma back as captain: Mumbai Indians made a bold move and handed over the captaincy to Hardik Pandya from Rohit Sharma before the start of IPL 2024 to ready a core for the future.

Let us look into the details of Rohit Sharma back as captain?

After failing to win in the first 5 seasons of the IPL, Mumbai back in 2013 made the brave decision to appoint Rohit Sharma as captain in the middle of the tournament, and Rohit guided MI to title in his captaincy debut.

He did not stop there and handed MI 5 IPL trophies – joint best record alongside CSK.

With MI failing to win in the last three seasons, and Rohit Sharma turning 37 this year, the MI management changed the leadership role and choose Pandya as their new skipper for IPL 2024.

But Mumbai faced a worse start to their IPL 2024 campaign and faced defeats in their games. Losing a game is one thing, but the field positioning, rotating the bowlers, were not up to the mark. These many mistakes forced MI to join the list of teams that conceded the most runs in a game.

MI under Hardik Pandya let Sunrisers Hyderabad hit 277 runs in 20 overs, a record in IPL.

Being one of the most successful sides in the history of the biggest T20 league in the world, Mumbai Indians will look to take bold decisions if the things will not turn in their favour soon.

Will Mumbai Indians follow CSK’s route?

Mumbai Indians will be thinking to follow CSK’s route to change the leadership role. Chennai in 2022 announced Ravindra Jadeja as their new skipper after MS Dhoni stepped down to hand over the captaincy to Jadeja.

CSK, who secured their 4th title under MS Dhoni in IPL 2021, started the 2022 season as the defending champions, but things did not go their way.

Their new skipper was seen clueless, and his personal form also witnessed a dip as he only managed to hit 112 runs in 92 balls, while he only bagged 5 wickets in 8 games.

Chennai under their new skipper won only 2 games in 8 outings, and the management took the decision to reappoint MS Dhoni back as Chennai’s captain.

CSK went on to win IPL 2023 under MS Dhoni, which was their 5th IPL title.

Mumbai Indians won their all 5 titles under Rohit Sharma (2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, 2020), and with Hardik Pandya not looking a promising leader as of now, the MI management may take CSK’s route and reappoint Rohit Sharma back as MI’s captain.
