Players Who Might Quit Captaincy Post T20 WC: The T20 World Cup 2022 might be the last hurrah for a few T20 stalwarts. As the next T20 World Cup is a good two years away, this edition might see quite a few retirements. If not retirements then the tournament will surely witness the passing of the baton to young guns. The ODI World Cup 2023 will be the grand farewell but this T20 World Cup too won’t be much different.

#3 Kane Williamson
He is arguably the greatest New Zealand batsman of all time. Kane Williamson was destined for captaincy very early in his career. Brendon McCullum, the then captain took Williamson under his wings. It was clear that post the 2015 ODI World Cup, Williamson will be the face of New Zealand’s leadership duties. The Kiwis who always punched above their weight found an able ally in Kane.
New Zealand narrowly lost out the 2019 ODI World Cup final to England. They broke their ICC drought with a win in the WTC finals over India. But they ended up losing the T20 World Cup 2021 final to Australia. Williamson now looks drained with the weight of captaincy. It’s the right time for someone else to take over from their star batsman.
#2 Aaron Finch
The Australian captain, Aaron Finch became the first captain to lead the side to the T20 World Cup title last year. Nobody had given Finch-led Australia to win the T20 World Cup 2021 but they did just exactly that. But Finch has endured a prolonged poor run of form. He has already given up ODI captaincy. It is widely expected that Finch would give up T20 leadership too post the home T20 World Cup.
#1 Rohit Sharma
He is someone who should have ideally led India earlier. Rohit Sharma is a proven leader. He is the most successful IPL captain winning 5 IPL titles with Mumbai Indians. Sharma also led India to wins in multi-nation tournaments like the Nidahas Trophy (2018) and Asia Cup (2018).
He was finally appointed as India’s all-format captain post-T20 World Cup 2021. India has done fairly well under his leadership with Asia Cup 2022 being the sore exception. The 35-year Sharma is almost at the fag end of his career. He clearly knows this is his only shot at T20 World Cup glory as captain. Sharma isn’t expected to stay around till the next T20 World Cup edition.
