Bedford Cricket Club turns out to be a safety net for evacuated residents

Bedford Cricket Club: It was not a good start for the citizens residing in the Goldington Green area of Bedford in the wee hours of Sunday. At around 6 am (local time), gunfire sounds emerged out of nowhere making the residents realize that there is a hostage situation.

Gripped under panic, people were completely confined indoors seeking help from the local police. Officers were called to Bury Court in the Goldington Green area with the initial operations starting by cordoning the entire area.

Bedfordshire Police on its official Twitter account cautioned the citizens saying that people may have seen a large emergency services presence in the Goldington Green area of Bedford this morning.

“We were called at around 6 am today to reports of a man in possession of a firearm at the Bury Court block of flats in Church Lane, Bedford,” the officials said.

Earlier in the day, the security officers told newsmen that several flats had been evacuated. Road closures were put in place along Cricket Lane, Church Lane, Goldington Green, and Queens Drive.

In order to bring the situation under control, the residents were moved to safe places. For emergency services, the police had identified Bedford Cricket Club. It was opened for use by emergency services.

The Bedford Borough Council representatives had worked to find alternative accommodation for residents who had been asked to leave their homes.

At around 6 pm, the police confirmed that the situation had arrived to a safe conclusion.

“The incident at the Bury Court block of flats in Bedford has now come to a safe conclusion. A second man inside the flat handed himself in to the police shortly before 6 pm and was arrested. This followed another man handing himself into officers earlier today,” the officials announced later in the evening.
