After Joe Root’s 116-ball century on day three of England‘s second Test against New Zealand, former England captain Michael Vaughan praised him and dubbed him a “genius.”
Root, who also hit a crucial century in England’s first-innings triumph at Lord’s, finished Sunday’s play on 163 not out, with the hosts still behind the Black Caps’ first-inning total of 553 by 80 runs when Trent Bridge closed on 473-5.
Root reached three figures in just 116 balls, the fewest he has ever needed to strike a century in a fruitful Test career, and he has now converted 10 of his previous 14 fifties into 100s.
